Privacy Policy

MarkSchrift, the plain-text workspace

Overview

MarkSchrift is a plain-text notes app for iPhone, iPad and Mac, with versions for the web (markschrift.app) and Android. Your notes are ordinary Markdown files that stay in a place you choose. Your privacy is fundamental to how MarkSchrift is designed.

Who operates MarkSchrift

MarkSchrift is developed and operated by RFRMD Word Labs LLC. For any privacy question, or to exercise the rights described below, contact support@markschrift.com.

Data Collection

MarkSchrift does not collect personal data for analytics, advertising or tracking. Specifically:

Your Documents

All documents you create and edit are stored locally on your device or in your personal iCloud Drive (if you choose to save them there). Outside of a live collaboration session you start yourself (below), MarkSchrift does not read, access, or transmit your documents to any server.

Live Collaboration

If you choose to share a document for live co-editing, the document's edits pass through the MarkSchrift relay server end-to-end encrypted. The encryption key is generated on your device and travels only inside the invite link you send — it is never sent to the server, so the server cannot read your document. The relay stores only the encrypted session data, deletes it when the session's lifetime you chose expires, and purges it immediately when you end the share. No account is required to join a session.

To route messages between participants, the relay necessarily processes basic connection information — such as the network (IP) address your device connects from, a random session identifier, and — when a device starts a share or hosts a project — a random per-install identifier the app generated the first time it ran. That per-install identifier is never derived from your hardware or your Apple ID, is not linked to your name or to your documents' contents, exists only so we can see which sessions came from the same install when operating the relay, and is discarded if you delete the app. This information is used only to operate the live session and is not used to identify you, is not linked to your documents' contents (which remain unreadable to us), and is not retained beyond what's needed to run and secure the relay. Any name a collaborator sets, and the "who did what" tags added during shared editing, are text you and your collaborators enter; they live inside your encrypted document and are yours to edit or remove.

iCloud Sync

If you store documents in iCloud Drive, syncing is handled entirely by Apple's iCloud infrastructure. MarkSchrift does not operate its own sync service and has no access to your iCloud account.

Search

In-document search runs entirely on your device. MarkSchrift does not build or transmit any external index of your content.

Diagnostics

MarkSchrift can, at your request, gather diagnostic information — such as the system's own battery and performance reports, or the app's recent log messages — to help troubleshoot a problem. This is entirely opt-in: nothing is gathered unless you ask for it in Settings, and the result stays on your device unless you choose to share it with us (for example, by attaching it to a support email). We do not collect diagnostics automatically or in the background.

MarkSchrift for the Web and Android

Where your notes live. You choose: a MarkSchrift folder in your Google Drive, a folder on your computer, or storage in your browser or on your device. Notes in a folder or on your device never leave it. Notes in Google Drive go directly between your device and Google; they do not pass through our servers.

Google Drive. If you choose Google Drive, MarkSchrift asks Google for access only to the files MarkSchrift creates and the files you pick (Google calls this "drive.file"). It cannot see anything else in your Drive. For Drive, Google gives your device a short-lived access key, held in memory while you work and never sent to our servers or stored.

Settings. Your MarkSchrift settings are kept in a small file beside your notes (.markschrift/settings.json), so each of your devices uses the same ones.

MarkSchrift Collab on the web and Android. Hosting a live session there needs a Collab subscription, which is tied to your Google account. When you subscribe or check your subscription, MarkSchrift asks Google only for your email address, and our server checks that sign-in with Google. To know who holds a subscription, our server keeps your Google account's identifier, your email address, a reference to your customer record at our payment processor, and your subscription's status and renewal date. It does not store the sign-in itself, and it never sees your notes.

Payments

In the Apple apps, purchases are made through Apple, and we receive no payment details. On the web, subscriptions are processed by Stripe. Your card details go to Stripe, not to us; we receive only the subscription's status. Stripe's privacy policy covers what Stripe holds.

Google API Data

MarkSchrift's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs to any other app will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Third-Party Services

MarkSchrift for iPhone, iPad and Mac uses no third-party services beyond Apple's. The web and Android versions use Google (Drive and sign-in, only when you choose them) and Stripe (web subscriptions).

This Website

The statements above describe the MarkSchrift app. This website (markschrift.com) uses GoatCounter, a privacy-friendly analytics tool, to count page views. It sets no cookies, does not track you across sites, and does not collect personal information.

Children's Privacy

MarkSchrift is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Your Rights

Your documents are entirely in your control, on your own devices, in iCloud or in your Google Drive; we hold none of them. You can remove MarkSchrift's access to your Google account at any time at myaccount.google.com, under Security, Third-party apps. To have your subscription record deleted from our server, cancel the subscription and contact us; we will delete it. You control any live-collaboration data directly: it is unreadable to us, expires on its own, and is purged the moment you Stop Hosting. If you are in a region with specific data-protection rights (such as the EEA, UK, or California) and have a question or request, contact support@markschrift.com and we will respond.

Changes to This Policy

If this privacy policy is updated, the revised version will be posted at this URL with a new effective date.
